Windows 7 Enterprise 32-bit:: False Positive: Application "has stopped working"
I have an application (proprietary; not widely used) which when ran triggers the application "has stopped working" dialog and I'm asked to Debug or close. If I ignore the dialog and just use the application it works fine however. Does anyone have suggestion on how to fix it so the dialog no longer prompts. Its not bad for me, but I doubt it'll be acceptable to the business users. The application isn't widely used and isn't supported under 7 by the vendor, but peers in other organization have said it works so the desktop deployment folks are refusing to stop the Windows 7 upgrades while we get this worked out so I'm in a bind. I'm really sorry to ask such an easy question; I'm sure its been answered but I'm having trouble finding the answer in all the noise. Edit: I found an error in the event viewer (don't know how I missed it initially). Its not really helpful to me, but just in case: Log Name: Application Source: Application Error Date: 10/19/2010 10:16:24 AM Event ID: 1000 Task Category: (100) Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: TP307120BTRIEST Description: Faulting application name: XxxxxxXxxxxxXX.exe, version: 2.1.1.7, time stamp: 0x49df3b02 Faulting module name: unknown, version: 0.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x00000000 Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x00287b50 Faulting process id: 0x%9 Faulting application start time: 0x%10 Faulting application path: %11 Faulting module path: %12 Report Id: %13 Event Xml: <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> <System> <Provider Name="Application Error" /> <EventID Qualifiers="0">1000</EventID> <Level>2</Level> <Task>100</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2010-10-19T14:16:24.000000000Z" /> <EventRecordID>5495</EventRecordID> <Channel>Application</Channel> <Computer>TP307120BTRIESTM</Computer> <Security /> </System> <EventData> <Data>XxxxxxXxxxxxXX.exe</Data> <Data>2.1.1.7</Data> <Data>49df3b02</Data> <Data>unknown</Data> <Data>0.0.0.0</Data> <Data>00000000</Data> <Data>c0000005</Data> <Data>00287b50</Data> </EventData> </Event> Edit: After reading the link Carey Frisch provided, I didn't find an answer, but based on it I thought of some more information I can provide: The "problem" happens when launching the application I have tried running it in compatibility mode for Windows XP SP2 and Windows XP SP3 as they are the support platforms for the application and we successfully run it under those operating system versions We run VirusScan Enterprise with AntiSpyware modules centerally manged by EPO -- I haven't tried disabling it or uninstalling (as suggested in the link) as I don't have rights to This is a pretty clean install (less then a week old) I have retried installing the application (clean uninstall and reinstall) and I have the same problem I want to really stress that if I ignore the error dialog, I can use the application just fine. Thus this seems like it should be something really simple and we have reports that others have gotten it working (they just aren't forthcoming with HOW)

Hi, I suspect this is a software compatibility issue since the software can work in Windows XP SP2 and Windows XP SP3. Please try the methods in the following page: Help with Windows 7 compatibility problems Meanwhile, you also try to run this software in Windows XP Mode: Windows Virtual PC Considering this issue is related to a specific application, it is also recommended that you contact the software company for help and see if there is a hotfix or a new version released. Nicholas, There are no updates from the software vendor. The vendor doesn't support Vista or Windows 7; but I am being forced to handle 7 as the Desktop group are rolling out window 7 without regard to it being supported by applications. Reinstalling doesn't help Compatibility mode doesn't appear to help (specifically I've tried Windows XP SP2 and SP3 multiple times). Either the application doesn't launch at all or it launches but I get the same error message Windows Virtual PC isn't allowed by the Help Desk team as then they have to worry about it being patched and up-to-date. I feel this would be the best option until the vendor officially supports Windows 7. I really appreciate everyone trying to help; this is really frustrating as another site said they had it working (which defeats my trying to halt Windows 7 roll outs until we get this straightened out) and in deed the application works fine except for the error dialog.

Just a suggestion but works quite often for us with applications we experience compatibility issues with. You can try downloading the Application Compatibility Toolkit and under tools choose the Standard User Analyzer wizard and try applying the recommendations listed to see if it works. You can even use the wizard on the installer. If it works you can save the msi to install on the pc's.
